What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are restorative devices used to both strengthen and protect your teeth's natural shape, size, and appearance. Essentially caps placed on top of damaged teeth, dental crowns can be made from ceramics, metals, porcelain, or resin. As permanent structures, crowns are cemented onto teeth and can last several years.

Patients best suited for crowns include those with severely decayed, broken, misshapen, discolored, or weakened teeth. Additionally, crowns can be used to hold bridgework in place, cover a dental implant, or protect a tooth that was recently treated with a root canal. The process of traditional crowns requires two visits: one to prepare the tooth and place a temporary device, and another to place the permanent restoration.

What is CEREC?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Simply put, it means that our dentists are able to efficiently restore damaged or decayed teeth in a single chairside session. Gone are the days of receiving a temporary crown that's prone to cracking while awaiting the fabrication of your permanent device. Plus, our Maplewood CEREC crowns dentist uses high-quality ceramic material that matches the natural color of your teeth, making it virtually impossible for others to identify the crowns from your real pearly whites.

Differences Between CEREC Crowns and Traditional Crowns

Both CEREC and traditional crowns can strengthen and restore your damaged teeth. However, there are notable differences between the two. They include:

- Procedure time. CEREC same-day crowns can be fabricated and placed within approximately one hour. Traditional methods require two separate visits to the dentist while the permanent devices are created in a lab.
- Impressions. A three-dimensional imaging technique is used to gain an impression of the damaged teeth through the CEREC process. On the other hand, traditional crowns mainly use a form of putty. - Materials. The permanent crowns patients receive with CEREC are made from a durable ceramic material. Traditional devices can be made from a variety of materials, such as porcelain, resin, metals, and more. - Fit. Thanks to the latest in cosmetic dentistry technology, CEREC crowns match the shape and structure of teeth better when compared to traditional methods.

unnamed-46The CEREC Process

The custom-fit, long-lasting permanent crowns produced by the CEREC process saves patients time. Using some of the most advanced technology in the industry, our CEREC crowns dentist in Maplewood incorporates a camera, computer and milling machine into one instrument.

First, the decay or old filling will be removed from the tooth that needs to be treated. Next, your dentist will use a special camera to take a 3D photograph of the tooth, removing the messiness and inaccuracies of a traditional restoration. This 3D model is then transferred and displayed on the CEREC computer screen. From there, your Maplewood CEREC crowns dentist uses computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to design and create the restoration.

Finally, the restoration is bonded to the tooth and checked for position, placement and bite function. The entire process takes about one hour, and you get to leave our office with your new permanent restoration. No need for temporary crowns or follow-up appointments!

The Advantages of Same-Day Dental Crowns

In addition to the obvious benefit of receiving a permanent crown in just one appointment, CEREC same-day dental crowns have several other advantages. CEREC was created with the patient's best interests in mind, and offers the following benefits:
- Less costly and time-consuming - Safely restores teeth to their natural state - Metal-free - Fewer painful injections of anesthetic - Longer lasting restorations - Smooth, mess-free impressions - No temporary devices needed
