Sedation Dentistry

As your trusted choice for a dentist in or around Maplewood and St. Paul, MN, we at Maplewood Dental Associates strive to go above and beyond in delivering the dental care that you deserve. We’re proud to offer a wide array of dental treatments in order to give you a more beautiful smile. However, we understand that many patients may feel anxious during these treatments, especially during minor surgical procedures such as dental implants. If you happen to be afraid or nervous of any dental treatment you’re about to undergo, please let us know beforehand. We’re glad to offer our sedation dentistry procedures in order to help alleviate your anxiety.

Before You’re Sedated

Before we can recommend any sedative to you, we’ll first need to obtain your complete health history, including any medications that you’re taking. We also need to know whether you smoke or drink. If you’re going to be sedated, you may need to have someone pick you up from your appointment as it will take a while for some of our sedatives to wear off.

Our Sedation Dentistry Methods

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a popular sedation dentistry method because it doesn’t require the use of needles. Instead, oral sedation is performed by either swallowing a sedative or letting a sedative dissolve underneath the tongue. Each method will take effect in just a matter of minutes and allow for a dental treatment to be as comfortable and relaxing as possible. Even though you’ll be conscious during the treatment, you’ll remember next to nothing about it afterward. Oral sedatives have been used for several decades and have long records of safety.

h-nitrousOxideInhalation Conscious Sedation

Nitrous oxide, which is a sedative that you inhale, has been used in dental offices for nearly 100 years. It’s time-tested and proven to be an excellent pain reliever. It can be used by itself or in conjunction with anti-anxiety medication that’s taken by mouth. Nitrous oxide is administered through a nasal hood that resembles a small cup. The nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen provides a light-headed feeling, though all bodily functions will remain normal during this procedure. This sedative is quick to wear off and there will be no “hangover” effect.
