Invisalign is one of the fastest-growing orthodontic treatments on the market today, and it's little wonder why. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign is nearly invisible when worn and still lets you enjoy your favorite foods and clean your teeth normally, offering major improvements in convenience compared to traditional braces. As a general, cosmetic, and restorative dental practice serving patients throughout the Maplewood area, we're proud to offer Invisalign to our patients. We want to make every part of treatment as easy and convenient as possible, so we've compiled a few of the most common questions about Invisalign along with their answers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign Treatment

How is Invisalign different from braces?

Invisalign differs from braces in the fundamental technique it uses to straighten teeth. While braces rely on metal brackets and a springy archwire to shift the teeth, Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners that fit directly over the dental arch.

What are the benefits of Invisalign over braces?

Thanks to its innovate design, Invisalign comes with a number of advantages:

  • Virtually Invisible: Invisalign is almost invisible when worn, so almost no one will know you're straightening your teeth.
  • Convenient: You can remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush, and floss, providing a uniquely convenient orthodontic treatment.
  • Maintain Your Normal Diet: Because you take aligners out to eat and drink, you don't have to modify your diet like you do with braces.
  • Oral Hygiene is Easy: Removing your aligners to perform oral hygiene means you don't have to worry about things like floss threaders or other devices to clean teeth.

How long does treatment last? How long do I wear the aligners?

The length of treatment differs greatly from patient to patient, but most patients wear Invisalign for between six and 18 months. During that time, you'll wear your aligners for 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss, and you'll switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks.

How do I clean my aligners?

Cleaning your Invisalign aligners is easy – just brush them every time you take them out and put them back in, and occasionally soak them in a glass of water with a denture or aligner cleaning tablet.

Can I chew gum with my aligners?

Gum can damage your aligners, so you'll need to remove them if you want to chew gum.

Can I smoke with Invisalign?

Smoking can discolor and warp your aligners, so if you need to smoke, you'll have to take them out to do so.

What happens after treatment?

As with all forms of orthodontic treatment, you'll need to wear a retainer once you finish your Invisalign treatment. You're in luck, though: you can just use your last pair of aligners as a retainer!

How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost of treatment depends on your specific case, and it varies greatly from patient to patient. We'll go over the cost of treatment along with your financial options during your first visit with us.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Some patients report a feeling of pressure or mild discomfort when they first put in a new pair of aligners, but this generally fades within a day or two.
